Imagine standing up for yourself by unionizing at a company where a huge sign on the building you work at reads, "Proud to be Union Free."

At Baldor, a specialty food distributor, more than 180 drivers tried to join Teamsters Local 202 on and off for the last decade. The most recent campaign heated up again in January of this year. A vote is scheduled for May 21.

Recently management put up a huge sign on the terminal building that reads, "Baldor, Proud to be Union Free."

On May 1, Teamster Local 237 held a very spirited rally at City Hall Park to raise awareness to the ongoing budget cuts slashing into the New York City Housing Authority, which employs about 8,000 Local 237 members.  Here's the whole story.

In late March of this year we were down in Jacksonville, Florida at First Student yard rallying for respect, a voice at work and better wages. Here is the video to relive it all!

The vibe is definitely different in Indiana, especially in Hammond and Gary, which lay on the fringes of Chicago, Obama's home turf and where we kicked off our two-day trek across the Hoosier state.

While the AFL-CIO is spending a lot of dollars, time and energy on its anti-McCain campaign and the Change to Win is going with Obama ... I have watched close to both remaining Democratic candidates since Edwards pushed out of the race. I am going with Obama, and ultimately the Teamsters – and I think all workers should follow suit.

The day started early, with the wheels rolling at 6:30 a.m. to Ocean Logistics, a warehouse distribution company that supplies health and beauty products to A&P stores up and down the East Coast.

Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa began campaigning with his first handshake with Local 229 principal officer Bob Webber. "This is all about Obama. He's talking about striker replacement, you know, things we were talking about ten years ago; things we've forgotten about; EFCA, this is important."

Use this Google Map to track the convoy, and watch for more updates throughout the day.

From January through March nearly 19,000 workers have chosen to be represented by the Teamsters. That figure nearly eclipses all of 2007’s organizing gains. In all of last year, roughly 21,000 men and women became Teamsters.

In a true testament of why we need the Employee Free Choice Act, the Teamsters' campaign to organize UPS Freight workers by way of authorization cards proves that, given the opportunity, workers will join a union. Keep up with this historical campaign where more than 9,000 workers exercised their right to join the union in fewer than three months.

Some fights are better than others ... the fight to organize workers at New Era Cap was definitely a good one.
The workers contacted the Teamsters with complaints of racial and gender discrimination, not to mention unfair labor practices.
Today, according to a Detroit daily the University of Michigan, a New Era Cap client, lifted its complaints of discrimination against
the company. Yet, another positive for why workers need a good union contract protecting them.
