Union Contract Also Lifted Racial Discrimination at New Era
The Michigan Daily reported today that the University of Michigan withdrew its complaints of discrimination against New Era Cap. This follows a tenuous battle to organize the company's Mobile, Alabama plant. The workers contacted the Teamsters with the hope to organize last year. They complained of unfair labor practices, gross racial and gender discrimination, and a low ceiling -- meaning, only certain workers were being promoted. The Teamsters, joined with the NAACP, organized the workers and helped change the company's practices; last month a victory was announced. While the battle ensued, however, a number of organizations, including the University of Michigan, broke off relations with the company, which manufactures baseball caps. The next time folks wonder what a union contract can do for them, point the doubters to this campaign and victory. |
