Victory For School Bus and Transit Workers in Omaha, Nebraska and Cologne, NJ.
School Bus and Transit Workers around the United States and Canada are choosing to organize with the Teamsters. Since the beginning of the year, there have been more than 10 victories already -- and the union reports that there are more than 6.600 workers who've joined for a voice on the job since the campaign began two years ago. Yesterday there were two more yards with a combined 688 workers who've successfully organized. One in Omaha, Nebraska and the other in Cologne, New Jersey ... last week a yard up in Canada also spoke up for their right to organize a union. This is an exciting campaign to watch and work on. The workers I've met are all fairly amazing people. Many of them have endured long hard years of disrespect, below-standard wages, and health care that either is not offered, or if it is offered - it is not affordable. The company where most of these folks are at is called First Student. This is a UK-based company, and is the largest school bus transport company in the United States and Europe. The parent company, FirstGroup is organized by T&G, which stands for the Transport and General Workers Union, part of Unite the Union. At a recent rally in Jacksonville, Florida for the 942 workers down there, I had the opportunity to meet with four gentlemen from England, three from T&G and one who is in the States working with the IBT. They told me that they are treated much better in Europe and that they are more than 90% unionized at this point. They'd come across the pond to show support for their coworkers State-side.
